Conrad and the sea

Joseph Conrad  was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. He was granted (gli fu concessa) British nationality in 1886, but always considered himself a Pole.[note 1] Conrad is regarded (considerato) as one of the greatest novelists in English,[2] though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties (and always with a marked accent). He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials (lotte) of the human spirit in an indifferent universe.

He loved the sea and made many voyages across the ocean on merchant ships. One ofthis voyages on the Congo river inspired him his masterpiece "Heart of darkness" (cuore di tenebra),which symbolized the mystery and the cruelty of human heart

Read this poem about the sea by an American poet ,it talks about the cruelty but also about the fascination of the sea
